How to Care For Removable Prostheses?

September 30d., 2024

Proper care of dentures affects their longevity, state of oral health and general well-being. Therefore, they must be carefully cleaned and cared for to keep prosthetic teeth long-lasting and not lose their aesthetic appearance, and the rest of your teeth stay healthy and undamaged.

Oral hygiene

  • Practice good oral hygiene and remove dentures before brushing your natural teeth.
  • Clean your teeth and mouth with a soft brush twice a day, use toothpaste according to your current oral and dental condition. Also, use interdental cleaning products and other oral hygiene products that are individually suitable for you as prescribed by a specialist.

All the dental and denture care products you need can be purchased in our clinic.

Food and drink

  • It is recommended not to chew very solid food and sticky food products (lump sugar, caramel candies, baked bread, popcorn, nuts, etc.). It is not recommended to eat hot and cold food at the same time.
  • Hold a sip of warm water in your mouth and only then remove the denture. This will make it easier for it to come unstuck from the mouth mucosa.

Maintenance of removable dentures

Cleaning

  • They need to be cleaned after each meal; at least rinsed under running water. This will remove all food leftovers.
  • Clean with a special brush (or hard brush with extended bristles) and a non-abrasive toothpaste or gel to avoid scratching the surface of the dentures.

Soaking

After cleaning the dentures with a brush, soak them in a special solution. Read on the packaging of the soaking agent how long to soak the dentures, and follow the manufacturer’s recommendation.  After soaking, rinse the dentures with running water.

Storage at night

The dentures should be removed at night and stored dry, allowing the tissues of the mouth to rest.

Visits to the doctor

For the first year of wearing, 2 visits are recommended, later it is enough once a year. During the visit, the dentist examines the condition of the mouth and dentures and, if necessary, performs an adjustment of the denture.
