Memo

What to Do After Endodontic Treatment?

September 30d., 2024

Root canal treatment

  • Do not eat or drink for 30 minutes after the treatment.
  • If painkillers have been injected, do not eat until their effect has passed, as you may bite into your cheek, tongue or lip.

Care of the treated tooth

  • Between endodontic treatment visits, the tooth is restored with a temporary filling, which makes the tooth crown weaker and can break.   The tooth must be protected: Do not bite or chew with it very hard food.
  • The temporary filling may wear out or crumble off. If the broken filling causes you discomfort and scratches the surrounding tissues, please contact us.
  • If the temporary filling has fallen out, call us as soon as possible – the tooth should not be open.   If this happens on the weekend, insert a cotton swab into the tooth cavity before eating.

Pain and medication

  • You may feel discomfort or pain at the site of the treated tooth for 2-3 days after treatment, sometimes for up to 2 weeks. The pain can vary from mild to severe. In case of pain, we recommend taking painkillers for the first 2-3 days.   Which ones specifically, the doctor should write at the bottom of the memo.
  • In rare cases, you may experience severe pain that cannot be unrelieved by medication. The surrounding tissues can become swollen, general well-being may deteriorate and you may be shaken with cold. All of these symptoms are caused by a major infection of the root canals of the tooth.  In this case, you will be prescribed antibiotics, and in some cases, you may also need a small incision in the gums.
  • If you begin to feel severe pain or swelling after treatment, please contact us. Outside office hours or on weekends, please contact the nearest emergency department.

Oral hygiene

  • Clean the treated tooth and interdentals as usual, in the morning and evening: with a toothbrush, toothpaste and interdental brushes or interdental floss.
  • If the gums around the treated tooth are sensitive, swollen, red and bloody, you probably have not cleaned the tooth and interdentals well enough. Try to do this more thoroughly and rinse with rinsing liquid.   We recommend choosing the latter with chlorhexidine.
