What to Do After Implantation?

September 30d., 2024

Post-procedure regimen

  • Mild bleeding from the wound may occur for some time after implantation, and saliva may turn pink. Within a few hours after the surgery, the bleeding passes on its own. After the procedure, you may feel short-term discomfort, as well as possible swelling of the tissues, haematomas (bleeding), and numbness of the surrounding tissues may be felt.
  • Visits for examination and removal of stitches are usually scheduled after 3 to 10 days.

Pain
There may be more or less pain felt after the operation. Use painkillers prescribed by your doctor to relieve pain.

  • Swelling
The first 2-3 days after surgery may be followed by swelling. This is a normal postoperative course. How severe the swelling is depends on the individual characteristics of the body and the surgery performed. The probability of swelling is higher in the case of larger surgery more than one implant is threaded) and in the case of bone augmentation.
  • To reduce swelling, to use cold compresses is recommended. An ice pack wrapped in a towel or other cloth should be placed on the cheek in the projection of the operated area. Keep the cold compress for 15 minutes, then take a break of 15-20 minutes and repeat again; a total of 3-4 times.  Cooling is appropriate for the first 24 hours. Also, try to sleep on the opposite side to the operated one; do not warm the operated area (do not cover it with a hand, towel, etc.).

Oral hygiene

  • Do not touch or rinse the operated area on the first day.
  • The next day, brush your teeth carefully with gentle movements, with a gentle toothbrush with paste, but do not rinse heavily after brushing. It is important to rinse your mouth after eating to remove any leftover food.
  • After the procedure, use an antiseptic rinsing liquid 2-3 times a day for a week, rinse gently after 30 seconds.

Physical and other activities
It is recommended not to go in for sports intensively on the day of the surgery, and also for 5-7 days after the procedure. Avoid any activity that would raise pressure (sauna, hot tub, etc.).

Smoking and alcohol

It is recommended not to smoke or drink alcoholic beverages for 24 hours before and after the procedure.

  • Smoking interferes with blood circulation, which makes wound healing more difficult, and increases the likelihood of infection entering the wound. Avoid smoking for as long as possible, especially during the first 48 hours. If possible, do not smoke for at least 2 weeks after implantation.

Nutrition

  • After the surgery, it is recommended not to eat for 2 hours, as well as to chew on the opposite side to the operated one.
  • Do not take hot food and drinks on the day of the surgery and 1-2 days after the surgery. The first week after the surgery, it is recommended to choose soft, cooler food.
  • On the operated side, it is advised to avoid strong chewing for 1-2 months so that the pressure of chewing does not transfer to the implants and harm their gain.
  • Do not wear removable prostheses that would rest on the operated area (the doctor will inform you how long not to do this). Do not touch the implants with your tongue or fingers until they are fully attached.

Complications

To avoid possible complications of the operation, the regimen explained by the doctor after the procedure and the recommendations given should be strictly followed. Your doctor may prescribe you antibiotics in addition to painkillers.  If pain medicines do not help, or tissues at the site of implantation start to swell a few days after the operation, it hurts when swallowing, your temperature increases, you feel general weakness or have difficulty opening your mouth, call the clinic immediately for an urgent visit.

Please note that each situation is individual and only your doctor can answer specific questions.

Additional information

  • If you have nasal congestion, use astringent drops or sprays (recommended by your doctor). The use of these sprays is also recommended for the first 2-3 days after surgery.

  • Tissue swelling usually resolves within 7-10 days.
  • Do not try to cut or scratch the stitches, as this can seriously harm further healing results.
