What to Do After Professional Oral Hygiene?

September 30d., 2024

Food and drink

  • Do not eat or drink (except water) for about 1 hour after the procedure.
  • Do not eat bright, coloured food products and do not drink coloured drinks for 1-2 hours, i.e. do not eat berries, beets, tomatoes, do not drink black coffee, black and green tea, tomato juice, red wine, etc. Soy, tomato and curry sauces also dye your teeth.
  • If dental fluoridation has been performed, do not consume dairy products for 24 hours.
  • If anaesthesia has been performed, eat and drink hot drinks only after the anaesthesia has passed. Protect the numb tissues – do not chew your lip, cheek or tongue.

Smoking

  • It is recommended not to smoke for 24 hours after the procedure.

It is important to note that smoking significantly increases the overall formation of plaque.  The chemicals in tobacco products affect salivation in the mouth, making it easier for oral bacteria to stick to teeth and gums.  Immaculate dental hygiene is very important for the teeth of a smoker because if the plaque is not removed regularly, solid plaque is formed, i.e. stones that can be removed only in the dentist’s office.

Possible side effects

  • It is normal that on the first day after the procedure, the general sensitivity of the teeth and gums can be felt and bleeding gums can be seen. Nevertheless, it is still very important to brush your teeth well, as good oral hygiene speeds up healing processes.
  • After the procedure, a slightly higher mobility of some teeth (damaged by periodontitis) may occur.

Oral hygiene

  • After oral hygiene, it is recommended to use a new toothbrush (usually it should be replaced every 3-4 months) and rinse the mouth with prescribed antiseptic solutions for 1 week (twice a day, after teeth brushing).
  • Oral hygiene should be performed every 6 months. In case of periodontal diseases or wearing braces, this procedure is recommended every 3-4 months.
  • Use the personal oral hygiene products prescribed for you individually.

All the dental care products you need can be purchased in our clinic.
