Endodontic treatment is required when the pulp of the tooth (soft tissue inside the tooth root canal) is inflamed or infected. Pulp inflammation or infection can be caused by a variety of causes: ingrained and untreated tooth decay, tooth injuries, split or cracked teeth.

If the pulp is damaged, the tooth loses vitality by killing blood vessels and nerves. If the pulp inflammation or infection is not treated, this results in persistent and increasing pain or even the formation of an abscess. Bacteria from the infected pulp at the top of the root can pass beyond the root, thus causing a relatively serious problem – inflammation of the tooth tissues adjacent to a pulp – periodontitis. Endodontic treatment can be performed on one or more visits, depending on the patient’s situation.

Endodontic treatment requires extreme carefulness and attention; therefore, the procedures use a microscope and other necessary tools.
